MissouriPRO, a non-profit health care improvement organization, is trying to raise awereness of the need for senior citizens with diabetes to be tested for retinopathy – an eye disease that can lead to blindness. Doctor Gregg Laiben of Kansas City, MissouriPRO’s Medical Director, says it’s important to increase awareness about this disease. Doctor Laiben says almost 17,000 Missouri Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes have not had a retinal eye exam in more than two years, while doctors recommend one every twelve months. He says the test is covered by Medicare and senior citizens should take advantage of this.
