Where a civil lawsuit can be heard remains a sticking point – a big sticking point – in efforts to address medical malpractice problems that seem to be drivingdoctors from Missouri. Doctors blame huge civil judgments for driving up medical malpractice premiums to a point that has forced some physicians to give up their practices. And they say those huge judgments frequently come when civil cases are moved to St. Louis. A bill before the Senate Judiciary Committee would require such lawsuits to be heard in the county in which the accident occurred. The committeehas not acted on any of the tort reform bills before it.
