University Expands Investigation Of MU Basketball Program

The internal investigation of the men’s basketball program at the University of Missouri has been expanded. University President Elson Floyd announced yesterday that Michael Devaney, who once chaired the Faculty Council at MU and has been a professor in Columbia since 1969, will lead an investigation of the entire program. In a press release, the University expressed concerns of “serious allegations” which have “touched on issues of academic integrity”. Those issues stem from allegations made by Ricky Clemons’ former girlfriend, Jessica Bunge, who claims Clemons got money and had some class work done for him at MU. Clemons, who is no longer with the team, was released from the Boone County Jail Sunday.

Royals Trade For Lefty

The Royals have added another pitcher. They traded two minor league players to the Indians for lefty Brian Anderson. His record isn’t all that impressive, but Cleveland’s offense didn’t support him much in 2003. Anderson’s 9-10 with a 3.71 ERA and is expected to start tonight against the Rangers. Control is Anderson’s forte; in 148 innings, he’s struck out 72 and walked 32. Perhaps the most impressive thing on his resume is playoff race experience. Anderson was on Arizona’s 2001 World Championship roster and in the post season he’s a career 2-1 with a 2.43 ERA. The move was in reaction to Kevin Appier leaving Sunday’s game with elbow stiffness. He’ll be examined to day and possibly put on the DL.

Lots Of Speed, Inexperience On MU Defense

Gary Pinkel released Mizzou’s depth chart yesterday and it had a youthful look to it. Two red shirt freshmen and three sophomores will start on defense for Missouri as they open their 2003 season against Illinois on Saturday. The freshmen are defensive end Brian Smith and rover Dedrick Harrington. The sophomores are nose tackle C.J. Mosely, whip Jason Simpson and cornerback Calvin Washington. Junior college transfer, Nino Williams, will start his first game as a Tiger at cornerback. There are two seniors starting on defense and there’s still some inexperience to be found. Brandon Barnes, who gets the nod at linebacker, moved to the position after spending his career as a safety. Mizzou’s season opener is Saturday against Illinois at the Dome in St. Louis. Pace Close To Signing

The Rams best lineman could be back with the team today. Orlando Pace is close to signing a new contract with the team, according to his agent, Carl Poston. The contract is a one-year deal worth $5.73-million as the team’s franchise player and is expected to continue to work towards another deal with a large signing bonus. Pace hasn’t practiced since last season, missing the team’s mini-camps and training camp. Pace was the first player taken in the 1997 draft and is a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Church And State Battle Could Stretch To Missouri

Some Missourians are expressing concern that the battle over the presence of the Ten Commandments on a stone monument at the Alabama Judicial Building could lead to similar dispute over a monument with the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the State Capitol in Jefferson City. Matt LeMieux, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, says the ACLU is not involved in any effort to remove the Ten Commandments from the State Capitol grounds. According to LeMieux the mere presence of a monument with the Ten Commandments does not necessarily violate the doctrine of separation of church and state. The monument could have historical significance.
