Battles with upstream states over management of the Missouri River crosses political boundaries as well. Senator Christopher Bond, a senior Republican, says he can’t sway some fellow Republicans in the Dakotas and Montana on their stand on the River. And, Bond says people in some of the upstream states need to remember that less water going through the dams means less electrical production. Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, a prominent state Democrat, says he, too, has trouble convincing fellow party members in upstream states to see management of the river his way.
Missouri Jobless Rate Dips Slightly In July
Missouri’s unemployment rate has edged down by a tenth of a point in July to 5.6 percent, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The rate is a tenth of a point lower than it was a year ago and marks the first decrease in seasonally adjusted unemployment since February. It compares favorably to the national jobless rate of 6.2 percent. It’s estimated approximately 165,000 Missourians were out of work in July. The unadjusted employment rate remained unchanged at 5.8 percent, compared to a 6.3 percent unadjusted rate at the national level.
