Democratic Party Chief Criticized For Dolan Comments

A former VFW official and former State Representative from Warrenton is unhappy with comments made by May Scheve, the Chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party. As State Senator Jon Dolan of Lake St. Louis was preparing to leave for a six-month stay in Cuba as part of his National Guard duties, Scheve told the St. Charles Women’s Coalition of St. Charles., “It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Don’t hurry back.” Former State Representative Russell Brockfeld of Warrenton understands there are political differences, but believes this is the wrong thing to be saying to someone heading off to serve his country. Brockfeld says comments like Scheve’s are a slap to all veterans and to those currently serving in the military. Scheve could not be reached for comment. But, a Democratic Party official says Scheve’s comment was tongue-in-cheek and that she wishes Dolan and his family well.

Yanks Blank Royals

There was no barrage of doubles for the Royals. After setting a team record for two-baggers on Monday, Kansas City was blanked 6-0 by the Yankees on Tuesday. Mike Mussina held them in check with eight innings of four-hit ball. Kansas City’s best chance to break Mussina came in the first inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Raul Ibanez got things going with a single, while Mike Sweeney and Joe Randa followed up with walks. The rally ended when Desi Relaford watched a called third strike. The Yankees lead came gradually as they scored a single run in six innings by six different hitters. Darrell May dropped to 5-6 on the season, giving up five of those runs off 12 hits. The Royals’ loss, combined with the White Sox win over the Angels, dropped Kansas City’s lead to a half-game in the American League Central.

Bunge Tells Star Clemons Cheated

Ricky Clemons’ former girlfriend detailed some of the allegations she’s made against him in an interview with the Kansas City Star. Jessica Bunge told the newspaper that when Clemons played basketball for Missouri that a tutor wrote at least one of his papers and did class work for him. Clemons, through his attorney Wally Bley, denied the charge. She also suggests that Clemons received more clothes than just the two pairs of shoes and sweatpants head coach Quin Snyder has admitted to giving him. The NCAA talked with Bunge on Monday but she was asked not to elaborate on the details of that discussion.

Cards Top Bucs, Pujols Streak Alive

Albert Pujols and Tino Martinez belted three-run homers in the first inning as the Cardinals topped the Pirates 10-6. Pujols’ blast was his 33rd of the season and extended his hitting streak to 26 games. It’s the longest Cardinal streak since Lou Brock hit safely in 26 straight in 1971. Rogers Hornsby set the Cardinal record at 33 games in 1922. Pujols was 3-5 and upped his average to .370, which leads the league. Pujols is second in the National League with 33 home runs and 105 RBI’s. Martinez was only 1-4, but his homer, a fielder’s choice and sacrifice fly meant a five-RBI night. Brett Tomko lasted six innings, to win his third straight and improve to 9-7 on the season. Over the final three innings Tony La Russa used five more pitchers, including Jason Simontacchi, who got his first save of the year by recording the final out of the game. The Cardinals trail the Astros by one game in the National League Central.
