Former Clinton White House aide turned broadcast journalist George Stephanopoulos will come to Kansas City next month for a charity golf tournament. Stephanopoulos will play in the “Sock It To Poverty” tournament to raise money for Redemptorist Social Services Center. The money raised will fund programs targetting the poor and elderly.
Peace Activists Rally In Kansas City

The war may be over but the protests aren’t. In Kansas City this weekend, peace activists railed against the war in Iraq, pointing out that the fighting continues. The Kansas City Interfaith Peace Alliance hosted the 22nd annual Peace and Justice Event in Loose Park. A speaker says the role of the group is to challenge the conventional thinking about the war to elevate the dialogue.
KC Area Communities Plan Amnesty Day For Those Wanted

A group of Kansas City area cities wants to give those who have violated their laws a break. North Kansas City, Riverside, Parkville and Platte City all will hold an amnesty day for people wanted on outstanding municipal warrants, mostly traffic tickets and minor offences. On Wednesday, violators will be allowed to report to the city without getting arrested. They will be allowed to either arrange a new court date or pay their overdue fines. Organizers of the special day say it will give offenders a chance to clear their records and start fresh without fearing arrest and jail time.
Corrections Department To Inform Ex-Cons They Are Allowed To Vote Again

A bill passed by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Bob Holden could add several names to the state’s voter registration lists. The legislation requires the Department of Corrections to notify ex-convicts that they have the right to register to vote. Department Spokesman Tim Kniest says it’s the notification aspect that’s new because people who have served their time already have the right to register to vote – at least in most cases. This law requires the Corrections Department to notify the person leaving prison or parole. It takes effect August 28th.
