A three-day sales tax holiday has gained tentative approval in the State Senate. Senator Peter Kinder’s bill gives people 72 hours during a week in August to stock up on school supplies – without paying sales taxes. No sales taxes would be collected on items of clothing $100 or less, school computers of $2,000 or less, and school supplies costing no more than $50 per purchase. Local governments could vote to exclude themselves. Kinder says the tax holiday would cost about $5-Million in lost income. His bill makes up for that loss of tax income by imposing a tax on out of state people who gamble and win here. The bill could be sent to the House later this week.
