It’s not just the people, but also the jobs, that are flowing from St. Louis city to St. Louis County. Figures released by the US Census Bureau show that in the 1990s the economic base for the St. Louis area shifted from the core of the city to the county. In 1990, about 170,000 motorists commuted each workday to St. Louis County, with about 200,000 traveling into the city. By 2000, those figures had reversed. The Bureau reports that 54,000 fewer city residents commuted to work, mainly because of the continued drop in St. Louis’ population.
