The descendants of Confederate veterans want the state to reverse its recent action of taking down two Confederate flags flying over Confederate cemetaries. State Department of Natural Resources Director Steve Mahfood ordered the flags removed from the Confederate Memorial Histoic Site near Higginsville and from the Fort Davidson Historic Site near Pilot Knob. Mahfood took the action after receiving a phone call from Governor Bob Holden’s spokesman Mary Still. Still made the call after St. Louis Congressman Richard Gephardt declared in South Carolina that the Confederate flag shouldn’t fly “anytime, anywhere”. Holden once worked for Gephardt, who is running for the presidency. Confederate descendants criticize the move as political, hasty and ill-informed.
