Missouri’s two U.S. Senators say they believe Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi did the right think by deciding to step down as Republican Leader in the Senate. Senators Christopher Bond and Jim Talent, both Republicans, had called for Lott to leave the post, claiming the controversy sparked by comments Lott made at a party for outgoing South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond stood in the way of the Republican agenda. Bond and Talent are on the side of a good number of Senate Republicans who think Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee is the right person to take over for Lott. Frist played a huge role organizing the Republican Senate election campaigning which saw the GOP take back control of the Senate.
