The Cardinals announced the signing of catcher Joe Girardi yesterday; he’ll back up Mike Matheny. Girardi started his career with the Cubs before moving on the Yankees where he collected three World Series rings. He returned to Chicago for a season. The team also came to terms with pitcher Garret Stephenson and catcher/outfielder Eli Marrero. Both were eligible for arbitration.
