The State Highway Patrol says drugs were at the root of the shootings in Dent County that have left a deputy sheriff and two other people dead and three other people wounded.The patrol says two people were killed at a private home in an incident the patrol says was drug-related. The victims are identified as Harriet Smith of Salem, and Michael Wells of Licking. Shooting broke out when Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford and Deputy Joann Barnes went to the home of suspect Earl Mitchell Forrest II a short distance away. Barnes was wounded in that second shooting, and died early this morning of her wounds. Wofford was treated and released at a local hospital for wounds suffered in the gunfight. A woman in Forrest’s house, Angelina Gamblin of Salem, is hospitalized in St. Louis. Forrest has been moved to University Hospital in Columbia. Wofford has been released from a hospital after treatment for his wounds.
