An effective tool for keeping motorists from speeding through highway construction zones is in short supply. Highway workers live in fear of the driver who does not takeconstruction zone speed limits seriously. We’ve already seen serious accidents in those areas. At a few of the construction sites, there are radar guns and illuminated displays that tell motorists their speed as they enter thezones. The Highway Patrol thinks the devices help motorists obey the speed limits and avoid fines, which are much heavier for offenses in road-building areas. Patrol Captain Chris Ricks says there aren’t nearly enough of them. But he says there are only about a dozen of those units available, only one for each highway patrol troop and a few others. Ricks wishes the Patrol had at least two or three times as many of them.
