A remark by a high-ranking Missouri official demonstrates what some people would claim is a lack of understanding of Muslims. State Homeland Security Advisor Tim Daniel says Islam and democracy do not mix; they are like oil and water. He made his remarks to a businessgroup at the Lake of the Ozarks. Daniel later qualified his remarks saying there is a lack of democracy in predominantly Islamic countries in the Middle East. Hamed Ghazali, who teaches at an Islamic school in Kansas City and serves as an imam at an Islamic Center, agrees there is a problem with having no democracies in Middle Eastern countries. But he believes Daniel has mistakenly blamed that on Islam. Daniel admits he is no expert on Islam and is only quoting what the record shows. Ghazali believes more information is needed for many Americans to understand the Islamic world.
