Missourians are finally getting a chance to dry out from this week’s rains. But the people who monitor and control the levels of the state’s rivers are anxiously awaiting the next storms. The systems of dams and lakes maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers to control the level of the Missouri River and some of its tributaries seem to be working as planned. Michael Bart with the Corps’s Kansas City Office says the heavy rainfalls of this past week have not overtaxed the system. But, Bart says he is concerned if the rain falls into areas that don’t have a lake system, such as the Grand River in Northeast Missouri. In the meantime, he says the Corps will carefully watch what happens next. Bart says now it’s a matter of where, when, and how much the next rainfall will be. He says the Corps is working closely with the Nationalweather Service to monitor the situation.
