A holiday from sales taxes has been approved by the State Senate – two weekends in August during which people can buy school supplies, clothes, and personal computers without paying sales tax. Sponsor Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau says the holiday has worked well in other states. The Senate says the tax holiday cannot be held, however, unless state workers get $900 pay increases. The proposed state budget contains no money for those raises this year. The House will look at the bill next.
