A proposal to freeze property tax levels for Missouri homeowners who are 65 and older has been turned aside by the State Senate. One part of the proposal would have required the state to pay local governments for any tax income they would lose because of that property tax freeze. State Senator Danny Staples of Eminence says there might have been a time when the state could afford to do that – but not now. Other critics attacked the proposal as unbalanced and incomplete. The Senate has adopted some reforms in the way property is taxed, but has refused to freeze property taxes for senior citizens.
