A man who decided the way to keep his garage from being robbed again was to rig a booby trap, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon. A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy found the home-made shotgun in the garage in Cedar Hill while checking it because of the recentburglaries. Officers say plastic pipes loaded with shotgun shells and roofing nails would have been triggered if the deputy had turned on the lights in the garage. The charge has been filed against the garage owner, V. John Kessler ofRichmond Heights. Almost ten years ago, Kessler was a key figure in the widely-publicized second-injury fund case. Kessler, a former lawyer, was convicted of lying to a grand jury investigating the case and got five years probation.
