The environmental group American Rivers says the Missouri River is the most endangered river in the nation because the current management of the river hurts endangered species. They want spring floods to restore habitat. Opponents of the controlled floods say they’re not controlled enough and could hurt people who live in the basin. American Rivers says there’s room for negotiations on the management of the river as long as the endangered species are taken care of. Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Steve Mahfood feels the state has already compromised a great deal to meet environmentalneeds. Both sides will have to wait until the end of May when the Army Corps of Engineers comes up with a final decision for future management of the river.
