Missouri Department of Transportation officials say the Amtrak passenger line between St. Louis and Kansas City will go away unless the Legislature approves more than $6-million in funding for the program. Right now, that money is slated to come out of the Rainy Day Fund. Jan Skouby MoDOT says keeping the line up and running keeps the door open for better service in the future. Skouby says the high-speed rail service is already in the works in Illinois and is planned to come into St. Louis. She says the state cannot afford to lose out on the opportunity such a line would bring.
