New test results show almost half of the children in Herculaneum have high levels of lead in their blood. And, one-fourth of the children younger than six actually have lead poisoning. The tests show 45 percent of the children living closest to the Doe Run lead smelter have blood levels above safe standards. A spokesman for the state Health Department calls the lead levels “unprecedented.”
