Security has tightened considerably at the State Capitol since September 11th. It might soon get tighter. Officials have outlined proposed added security to a joint legislative committee, such as an upgraded electronic security system, security for the ventilation system, turnstiles and card swipes at entrances, and additional guard stations. The measures would affect the Truman State Office Building as well. State Design and Construction Director Randy Allen says a team devised the plans based on assumptions which he says stopped short of worst-case scenarios. Some lawmakers are hesitant. They say it’s important to keep the Capitol as open as possible. The committee gave the go ahead to plan for $2.4-Million in upgrades, but wants to talk more before final approval.
