Legislation aimed at having the state help the St. Louis Cardinals build a new downtown ballpark has been introduced in the Missouri House. Cardinals’ President Mark Lamping says this proposal is superior to the one that failed in the Legislature last year. He says it provides greater guarantees to Missouri taxpayers that they will not have to foot the bill if there are cost overruns or if the project fails to materialize as planned. Lamping concedes the team faces a tough challenge selling the project. He says the Redbirds must take their case to lawmakers and citizens in all corners of the state to demonstrate the state will reap more in benefits than is paid out for this project.
