Emergency medical officials in the Kansas City area are assessing their response in the wake of the ice storm. Many hospitals had to close emergency rooms to ambulances for several hours. That has led to concerns that the area is not equipped to handle emergencies of this size. During the storm and its immediate aftermath, nine area hospitals were closed for 10 to 30 hours while four hospitals were shut down for more than 30 hours.
