The Department of Higher Education accepts that the agency and the state’s instutions of higher learning will have to get by with less money from the state. The Department’s Board has accepted a recommendation that it go along with Governor Holden’s proposal for a 10-percent cut in the budgets of the agency and the colleges and universities. Department Associate Commissioner Joe Martin is optimistic the money might be returned in the future. Department officials say they’ll watch the budget process closely as it goes through the Legislature, and keep their fingers crossed that the current 10-percent cut does not get worse.
