State lawmakers in Jefferson City are mulling over legislation that would require foster homes, juvenile homes, and residential care facilities for young people to conform to state regulated safety standards. Senator Roseann Bentley of Springfield, the sponsor, says facilities would have to be registered – a fairly flexible process. But, Pastor Sam Gerhardt of the Mountain Park Baptist Church and Boarding Academy in Patterson tells a Senate committee residents of Missouri should be proud toleave faith-based institutions in control of their own facilities without state intervention. Supporters of the legislation say statewide standards and a registry would help to safeguard the safety of the children in thefacilities.
