People who think the property tax is a lousy way to pay for their public schools are not likely to get any satisfaction from the Legislature this year. Local financing of schools is based on property taxes, a system which critics who say it is unfair to property owners – and does not require renters to pay a share. But a joint legislative committee that has spent months looking at how public schools are financed does not recommend any changes.
