Missourians are getting their say now. As the US Army Corps of Engineers struggles with how to change how it manages the Missouri River, and even if changes are needed at all, it has been soliciting public opinion. The Corps has held public meetings upstream in states that favor retaining more water in the six upstream reservoirs for recreation and releasing less water downstream for navigation. It began public hearings in Missouri last week when it met in St. Joseph. This week the Corps comes to Kansas City and Jefferson City. Next week, it plans to travel to Sikeston. Governor Holden has joined Missouri’s Congressional delegation in its efforts to block a change in the Missouri River management, a change Missouri officials say could cripple the navigation industry in the state. Governor Holden plans to address the Corps during its Wednesday evening public hearing at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.
