State law limiting political party contributions to candidates has been upheld by a federal appellate court and the party that challenged it pledges to now live by it. The 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals reversed an earlier decision against the 1994 law when the US Supreme Court upheld a similar Colorado law and ordered the appeals court to review its decision in light of the Colorado ruling. The Missouri Republican Party had challenged the law. Its executive director, John Hancock, says the ruling disappoints him. Hancock points out the law doesn’t limit the amount of money that can be spent in a campaign, only the interaction between parties and their candidates. Hancock says it makes no sense to allow unlimited spending by a political party, yet prohibit it from coordinating that spending with its own candidate.
