The group representing the state’s corrections employees has filed a petition with 2,666 signatures, asking the State Labor Department to decertify the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) as its bargaining unit. The Corrections Officers Association believes the union has not done a good job of representing the workers. It is also concerned with so-called fair share fees collected by unions – these are fees that are paid by all employees in a bargaining unit, whether ornot they are members of the union.
