Royals All-Star First Baseman Mike Sweeney has been suspended for ten games by Major League Baseball for his role in that bench-clearing brawl with Detroit last Friday. Sweeney’s penalty was the harshest of nine handed down by baseball yesterday in connection with the fight. Royals pitching coach Al Nipper was suspended for three games and catcher Brent Mayne was fined. The Royals will visit Detroit this weekend. Sweeney is expected to begin serving his suspension today.
