The see the Missouri River as Lewis and Clark saw it when they went across Missouri in 1804 is a growing possibility. Several steps are being taken to that end. The first is the creation of maps showing the way Missouri looked 197 years ago. The new maps are so accurate that National Geographic will publish some of them. The maps were drawn by Jim Harlan withthe University of Missouri’s Geographic Resources Center in Columbia. Among other resources, he used more than 200,000 pages of surveys from the late 1700’s and early 1800’s that are housed in the state archives.
