The American League captured the All-Star Game for the fifth straight season last night, taking a 4-1 decision over the National League. Kansas City Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney went 0-1 for the Amerian League, flying out to right in his only at-bat. Both St. Louis Cardinals representatives made appearances in the game. Righthander Matt Morris pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing a hit while picking up a strikeout. Rookie third baseman Albert Pujols walked in his only plate appearance. Seattle righthander Freddy Garcia earned the win for the A.L., Chan Ho Park takes the loss for the senior circuit. Cal Ripken Jr. hit one of three American League home runs and as a result was named the game’s MVP. The Baltimore Orioles third baseman is retiring at the end of the season.
