Despite last week’s fatal fire. the Division of Family Services says it has confidence in the state’s system of foster agencies. They hold the 2,000 Missouri foster kids who can’t stay in traditional homes. They’re all different and specialize in different kinds of kids, some with medical problems, others who misbehave. They also keep children temporarily when the state is trying to place siblings in a home together. Deputy Director of Children’s Services Anna King says the institutions can be big–100 or more kids sometimes–but are tightly regulated through regular inspections.
