American gymnasts have gathered in St. Louis, where today they will begin competing in the U.S. Gymnastics championships. Most of the events will be held at Kiel Center, with rhythmic gymnastics at Washington University, and trampoline and tumbling events at St. Charles Family Arena. The men’s competition gets underway today. The top 14 qualifiers will advance to the U.S. Olympic trials in Boston, where six will make the Olympic team. The women begin competing tomorrow. Five gold medalists from 1996 will take part, including two-time Olympian Shannon Miller. Miller may only compete in the uneven bars, as she is recovering from a hairline fracture in her leg. The top 12 women will advance to the trials in Boston, but as a former Olympian Miller could receive a waiver to compete.
