A lot of money devoted to a serious problem is at stake as a special committee suggests names for The Missouri Foundation for Health board. The foundation is an outgrowth of the state settlement with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of St. Louis when it created the for-profit arm of Right Choice. It has $12 million in cash and between $200 and $500 million in stock to devote to the health needs of the poor in the Blue Cross service area. Columbia lawyer Craig Van Matre, the secretary of the advisory committee, says the Foundation will have to determine the most serious health needs to address.
