Many sheriffs in Missouri have their own horror stories like the shootings in Randolph County that have prompted higher security. Saline County Sheriff Wally George spent years vulnerable to angry visitors. In 1998, he moved into a secure, $4.5 million dollar facility. Cole County Sheriff John Heymeyer recalls a threatening gunman at the sheriff’s department facility in the 1970’s and a suicide ten years ago. Boone County Jail Administrator Warren Brewer says many sheriff departments use bullet-proof glass, double-doors, cameras and metal detectors.
