Shawon Dunston led the Cardinals to a wild comeback, as the Redbirds rallied from an 8-1 deficit to beat the Giants 11-10. Dunston had two home runs, a double and six runs batted in, with the biggest blow coming in the bottom of the 8th. Trailing 9-7, Dunston lofted a fly ball down the left field line. Barry Bonds went to the wall, reached up, and the ball ball bounced off his glove and over for a three-run homer to give the Cards the lead. The Giants tied the game at 10 in the ninth, but the Cardinals rallied in the bottom half. Mark McGwire was hit by a pitch, and Eli Marrero pinch-ran and went to third on Ray Lankford’s single. Craig Paquette’s come-backer was too hot for Giants pitcher Mark Gardner to handle, allowing Eli Marrero to score the winning run. McGwire hit his 548th home run, tying Mike Schmidt for 7th on baseball’s all-time list.
