Some of Mark McGwire’s home runs are bigger than others. Last night he strode to the plate in the 7th inning of a 3-3 game in San Diego, and hit a big one. McGwire hit a two run shot into the second deck off Matt Clement to snap the tie. McGwire’s blast made it 5-3 Cardinals, and the Redbirds went on to beat the Padres 7-3. Andy Benes improved to 6-3, striking out ten while allowing three runs in six innings. Mike Matheny also homered for the Cards, a two-run shot in the ninth to give them some breathing room. The Reds lost in San Francisco, giving the Cardinals a 2 and a half game lead heading into this afternoon’s rematch with the Padres. Darryl Kile will pitch against Rodrigo Lopez.
