Cardinal pitcher Alan Benes is taking a major step in his comeback this afternoon. Benes is pitching against the Baltimore Orioles, his first action against big-league hitters this spring. The Cards plan to start Benes in the minors on a rehab assignment, and hopefully have him join the bullpen in a few months. Rick Ankiel will also pitch today. Ankiel will pitch out of the bullpen the first few games of the season. His first start will be a week from Sunday.Catcher Mike Matheny has made the Cardinals roster. Matheny may start much of the time. He will share the duties with Eli Marrero. Veteran Rick Wilkins was sent to Triple-A Memphis this week, so he is available should Matheny or Marrero struggle. Today’s game against the Orioles is the Cards final game in Florida. They play the Rangers in Texas tomorrow, and play at Memphis Saturday.
