I’m with Mark McGwire on this one. Opening Day in Tokyo? It doesn’t seem right. In case you missed it, the baseball season is underway. The Mets and Cubs threw out the first pitch at approximately 4am Central time, at the Tokyo Dome. McGwire complains that the trip is all about money and is unfair to the players who must endure that travel during the regular season. He’s right. These games count, and so do the games the Mets and Cubs will play when they’re suffering from jet lag back in the states. Some say McGwire is a hypocrite, because he makes millions, but he stayed in St. Louis for less money, gives plenty to charity, and has voiced his distaste for baseball’s high salaries. Baseball is trying to market itself in foreign lands, which is fine. But do it in the offseason. Opening day is an American tradition, and belongs here. Besides, if baseball really wanted to stir up interest in foreign lands, they missed the boat. They should have sent the Atlanta Braves to play in front of all those Japanese. John Rocker would have packed ’em in.
