The state senate acts to halt traffic stops of people who are D-W-B. The senate approves a proposal making police keep records of the race of every driver they stop. The records will be used to determine if people are being stopped because of their race. The sponsor is Senator Wayne Goode of Normandy. Goode says the practice can lead to other abuses–searches of vehicles based on the race of the driver…or holding drivers for some time if they don’t want to give permission for a search. Goode’s bill would require records to be reviewed by the attorney general to see if traffic stops focus disproportionately on a certain racial group. It contains no penalties. But Goode says solutions can be found to a problem…once the problem is found.
